Where it all started
From a young age I struggled with my weight. I loved food and was big for my age. I kept hearing 'he's a growing lad', but in truth I was overweight. I wasn’t very sporty at school; I didn't enjoy or find PE engaging, the only thing I did enjoy was rugby but limited opportunities at my school meant that I never pushed myself.
It wasn't until I started going to the gym aged 14 that I began to find something I really enjoyed and formed an interest in. When I first started training, I had a basic gym induction and used mostly machines which got me by, but I didn’t see much progress.
After leaving school I went to college to study Uniformed Public Services. Here I had a clear focus of where I wanted to go and the job I wanted to do.
I wanted to be a Firefighter, and to be that I had to be fit.
This goal helped me focus; I started educating myself on how to get the most out of training. I learnt how to eat healthier, I learnt different training methods and most importantly my mindset changed to one of long-term health, rather than short term fixes.
I joined the Fire Service in 2005 and have maintained my fitness throughout my career, I wouldn't want my fitness to let me down when someone else needed it most. I have always enjoyed challenging myself and have completed many obstacle course races; from 10km ones to a giant 30km! I also enjoy competing in the British Firefighter Challenge; a work related fitness competition.
I qualified as a personal trainer in 2018, turning my passion for health and fitness into helping others; not only helping firefighters stay fit and healthy, but also transforming and educating others to lead healthier lives.
